A Unique Project in a Historic Setting
Some projects stand out not just because of the work involved, but because of the responsibility that comes with them and this was definitely one of those.
We were recently appointed to provide safe access around the historic China Tea House at Beckett Park in Shrivenham, supporting essential masonry repairs and maintenance to this remarkable building set within the lake.
A Building of Exceptional Importance
Also known as the Summer House or Fishing Lodge, the China Tea House is a Grade I listed building, dating from around 1635–1655 and attributed to Inigo Jones.
Grade I status is reserved for buildings of exceptional interest, meaning every aspect of the work had to be approached with extreme care. Protecting the structure, its setting, and the surrounding environment wasn’t just important, it was critical.

The Challenge: Access Without Impact
With the building positioned within the lake, access is naturally restricted. But beyond that, the Grade I listing ruled out any solution that could risk ground disturbance, damage to the historic fabric or environmental impact on the setting. Traditional access methods simply weren’t suitable.
Our Solution : A carefully designed Floating Platform
To meet these constraints, we supplied a modular floating pontoon system, creating a stable, non-intrusive working platform around the perimeter of the building. On a project like this, the access solution isn’t just about practicality, it’s about preservation.
This allowed scaffolding towers to be installed safely, giving contractors the reach they needed to carry out repairs without any physical impact on the building or its surroundings.
Every element of the system was planned with care, ensuring even load distribution, secure and stable footing for the workforce and minimal contact with the structure itself.

Supporting Sensitive Restoration Work
Working on a structure of this importance requires close attention to detail at every stage. By providing a safe, adaptable access platform, we were able to support the restoration team in carrying out their work efficiently and responsibly.
Projects involving Grade I listed buildings always carry an added level of responsibility, and this was no exception. Being trusted to contribute to the preservation of such an important historic structure is something we take seriously.
This project is a great example of how the right access solution can make complex, sensitive work not only possible but safe, efficient, and respectful of the past.
