Scope of Works
Floating pontoon access was needed for roof strengthening works at an indoor reservoir near Southampton, a site built above ground but fully enclosed within a building. This ruled out any conventional way of launching a pontoon, since there was no slipway or open bank to work from. Instead, the pontoon sections and equipment had to be lifted into the reservoir through a doorway using a hoist suspended from an RSJ beam, then assembled section by section once inside. The contractor needed a stable platform able to support a MEWP for safe access to the roof structure, where strengthening brackets were being installed directly over the water.
Solution
Floating Pontoon Hire supplied a double-stacked modular pontoon system, chosen for the extra buoyancy and stability needed to safely house a MEWP over water. Because the system could be installed in individual sections and connected together once inside the building, it avoided the need for a large open launch area, making it well suited to the restricted indoor environment. This gave the contractor a secure working platform from which to access and strengthen the roof structure. A safety boat with two crew was also provided onsite throughout the works, adding an extra layer of support and reassurance for the team working over water.
