Our team have been onsite in Manchester this week commencing the install of a floating pontoon platform directly beneath Manchester Victoria station, creating safe access for engineers surveying the river tunnel.
The pontoon measuring 17×2 metres in total and double stacked, is designed in two sections: a 12×5m fixed landing platform that will remain in place during the survey works, and a 5×5m mobile section used to move a Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) safely through the tunnel. Each day the 5x5m section will be reconnected and the MEWP removed from the pontoon.
Due to restricted access and the confined working area, pontoon modules were lifted into position by crane and assembled on the water. Once connected and double-stacked for additional buoyancy and load capacity, the pontoon was securely anchored in place to withstand both the water flow and the weight of the MEWP.
The installation was completed under the supervision of experienced site engineers, with a focus on maintaining the highest safety standards. Continuous monitoring ensured platform stability and alignment throughout the process.
