Yes, in many cases you can.
Floating pontoons can be configured to support excavators, telehandlers, MEWPs and other heavy plant, providing a practical working platform where access from the bank is difficult or impossible.
However, choosing the right pontoon for heavy plant involves more than simply looking at the machine’s overall weight.
What information is needed?
The best starting point is the make and model of the machine, together with:
- Laden or operating weight
- Overall dimensions
- Track or tyre dimensions
- Outrigger loads, where applicable
- How the machine will be used
- How it will be loaded onto the pontoon
Excavators, telehandlers and MEWPs
Different types of plant apply their loads in different ways.
Excavators generally spread their weight through their tracks, although the loading changes as the machine slews or reaches out.
Telehandlers transfer their weight through relatively small tyre contact areas, with the load distribution changing as the boom is raised or extended.
MEWPs and cherry pickers can create high concentrated loads through their outriggers, so load-spreading mats may be required.
This means two machines of a similar weight can need very different floating pontoon arrangements.

Pontoon size and load distribution
A floating plant platform needs to provide enough space for the machine to operate safely, rather than simply matching its footprint.
Allowance may be needed for:
- Safe clearance from pontoon edges
- Boom and slewing movements
- Outriggers
- Load-spreading mats
- Access for operatives
For heavier plant or higher point loads, a double-stacked pontoon may also be recommended to provide additional buoyancy and reduce local movement.
Getting plant onto the pontoon
Site access is another important consideration.
Plant can be driven onto a floating pontoon, loaded via a ramp, lifted into position or placed on the pontoon before it is moved into its working location.
Water levels, bank conditions and available lifting equipment will all influence the best approach.
Floating pontoons for heavy plant
Floating Pontoon Hire can provide modular floating platforms for excavators, telehandlers, MEWPs and other heavy plant used on construction, bridge, maintenance and marine projects.
If you are considering using plant on a floating pontoon, send us the machine details, site location and a brief description of the works and we can advise on a suitable pontoon size and configuration.
